Uttarakhand floods: Cracks found in parts of Kedarnath temple

Dehradun: It's been a month since the devastating flash floods hit Uttarakhand. The Archaeological Survey of India has inspected the Kedarnath shrine and has raised concerns.

Huge cracks have developed in some parts of the Kedarnath temple, but the sanctom sanctorum escaped damage. The eastern part of the 'Mandapa' has suffered a lot of damage, said Atul Bhargava, ASI Superintendent Archaeologist.

"Our three-member team had visited the temple on July 11 and handed over the preliminary report to higher officials in Delhi. Report suggests that there was not much visible damage to the garbha griha (sanctum sanctorum)," he said.

"The situation in Kedarnath is not too favourable. As and when we get permission, our team will focus on three important aspects. First, on the clearing of the debris, then on security, and finally on renovating the temple and restarting activities for pilgrims," Bhargava added.
