Thrissur: The agitation against the Nitta Gelatin India Ltd (NGIL) company in Kathikudam here turned violent resulting in injuries to some 40 persons, including eight policemen, on Sunday.

Police  lathicharged the Samara Samiti activists, who  took out a march to the company and staged a dharna demanding the removal of the company’s discharge  pipes  to Chalakudy river.  The joint action council has called a hartal on Monday in the district in protest against the police action.

In quick response to the lathicharge, home minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan asked director-general of police K.S. Balasubramaniam to probe the incident.

When the police  tried to physically remove  the protesters who squatted at the entry gate of the company  preventing the movement of vehicles from and to the company, they resisted and what followed was a ding-dong battle.

The police resorted to a lathicharge and the protesters pelted stones at them.   The police  allegedly  entered the houses of protesters  and attacked even housewives, eyewitnesses said.
