‘She Taxi’, a government-backed 24x7 taxi service operated by women for women travellers in Kerala, will be flagged off by Minister for Social Justice M K Muneer and actress Manju Warrier here on Tuesday.

Muneer will also officially declare the actress as the Goodwill Ambassador of the service, initiated by the Gender Park, on the occasion. Manju has volunteered to support She Taxi which is designed not only as a safe and reliable mode of transport for women but also as a means to achieve gender equity.

“As someone who has had first-hand experience of the difficulties and worries faced by women while travelling in unfamiliar cities at odd hours, I know how important a service of this kind will be to women. I’m sure this is an idea that will catch on quick,” said the actress.

She Taxi has been designed to encourage entrepreneurship and self-employment among women. K.M. Abraham, additional chief secretary, Department of Social Justice, said She Taxi will open up huge opportunities to women.

“Driving has been a male-dominated area in our country, in the service sector and otherwise. This will not only bring in more women into this sector but also eventually bring about a sea change in our traffic culture as a whole,” he added.

“Women are acknowledged to be inherently safe and responsible drivers. As more women take to the roads, handling public transport services, we can expect to see fewer traffic problems and rule violations,” he added.

The Gender Park has developed a business model for the ‘She Taxi’ which projects a steady monthly income for the women entrepreneurs besides additional revenues through ads on the sides of the cars, in-car LCD systems for streaming ads and others.

Muthoot FinCorp has already expressed willingness to advertise on the sides of the first five She Taxis as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. Following the flag-off the She Taxis will hit the road with some of the invited guests, including Muneer, Manju Warrier and poetess Sugathakumari as their first passengers.

Once fully operational ‘She Taxi’ will be a 24x7 service available for booking via mobile phones and online. Women travelling alone or with families will be able to dial a toll free number connecting to a customer care centre.

They will get a Unique Identification Code and the vehicle number on their mobile phones. All cabs will be metered and will have an electronic payment system allowing the user to pay using credit or debit cards or cash.

The She Taxis will come with multiple security systems for the safety of the drivers as well as the passengers. A control room will track the taxis in real-time using GPS; there will be personal emergency alert switches for drivers and passengers inside the car; and a similar safety alert app will be installed on the mobile phones of the women drivers.
