“Take a music bath once or twice a week for a few seasons, and you will find that it is to the soul what the water-bath is to the body.” This saying by Oliver Wendell Holmes rightly describes how effective music can be for us. It is however a known fact that music helps in instant mood lifting. Sad, bored, depressed or lonely, what’s your mood today? Whatever it may be, listen to some good music, you’ll spark up instantly. Maybe that’s the reason why we relax ourselves during weekends listening to music or clubbing or even enjoying at the disc just to get a flavor of some good music. Good music flushes out our entire tiredness and exhaustion over the long week. It boosts our spirit to start a new week with all the enthusiasm needed.

But do you know that today researches by scientists and doctors have proved that music heals many a diseases too? Isn’t that a fantastic painless treatment?

What is music therapy and how it promotes better health?

Music plays its magical charm to relieve both physical and mental illness.

·         Whether too angry or too tensed, music helps you to calm down. Put on some soft music, it will   soothe your mind. As we know that getting hyper is not at all good for health, it increases our blood pressure, so listen to music and calm down.

·         When you are doing breathing exercises, why not put on some spiritual music. Breathe along with the rhythm of music and de-stress yourself.

·         According to music therapists, music improves your physical health too. It normalizes your heart beat rate, improves cardiovascular health, loosens up muscles, helps with chronic pain because music releases endorphins, and promotes motor skills in ADD children.

·         If we speak about how music improves mental health, it uplifts your mood and brings you out of depression. Listening to good music will immediately shun out all the negative thoughts giving way to positivity.

·         Music also soothes minds of over-reactive ADD patients.

A few studies and research have been made by doctors and therapists from around the world which shows how music works in improving our health conditions.

·         Recent studies from Austria have seen that persons with chronic back pain get relief from listening to music.

·         A certain therapist from a renowned US University has found out that music cures cardiovascular patients to a great extent, no matter what type of music.

·         Another research shows that music helps if you get tensed too fast or get anxious to such an extent that you start walking from one corner of the room to another. This is called hypertension in medical terms. Listen to classical Indian music; it will calm down your mind. And also practice breathing exercise regularly.

·         Those suffering from depression and ADD (attention deficit disorder) should listen to rhythmic music. Rhythmic music helps change brain waves and is a good treatment for neurological conditions. 

Due to the modern lifestyle that we practice, we suffer from various illnesses. Why not repair our ailments with the magic of music? Now-a-days there is a growing medical field known as music therapy. Music therapy refers to healing diseases with the help of music. Doctors have even found it effective to help patients suffering from serious diseases like cancer with music. Even for kids who have attention deficit disorder (ADD), have been found to react positively to music therapy. These days even hospitals are using music and music therapy to soothe the depressed mind of patients for their quick recovery, to boost their movement and to ease pain. Music affects the body and mind in many effective ways.
